These prints are all of birds that are in our garden and the bush on our property. We have planted hundreds of flowering natives to attract birds in our large garden. Bell birds sing all day and honeyeaters are plentiful. Crimson Rosellas fly in the bush as we walk, Noisy Friarbirds nest and bring out young, and I watch Eastern Spinebills feeding their babies as I do the washing up.
We are surrounded by the beauty of flowers and bush and the birdlife in them.
Many waterdragons live down at the dam and large goannas make an appearance every so often to cause the birds to make a racket.

The prints in the section are either Lino or Woodcuts.
They are mostly of flowers from our garden. I simply pick a bunch and put them in a vase and draw directly onto the piece of lino or wood. Then I carve away the image and print with black ink. The parts that are left white on the paper are the parts that I then hand colour with watercolour. Sometimes I leave the background to print black, whereas other times, I carve away the background also and then usually leave it white in the finished print. There are usually small sections of lino left in the background of the print, which pick up ink and thus becomes a background for the floral arrangement.
When I am hand colouring an edition of prints (an edition is at least 4 or more prints the same), I colour all of one print first, then sit that beside the next print to colour and colour each piece of the work carefully to match. That way, the edition has the same colours in the plants, with only minimal variation. For large prints, it usually takes two to three days to colour one print.

The photographs here show a variety of stages in the process of lino and woodblock printing. I usually work from photographs, which are often images from my own property or the local area.
The Barrington Tops and The Gloucester Tops are beautiful areas which also inspire me.
This series of photographs, documents the process of lino printing.
To begin, I start with a flat piece of lino.
If I want the image to be much larger than approximately 60cm in either width or length, it is best to glue it to a solid piece of Masonite or other board to enable movements without cracking or breaking the lino.
Then, I draw my chosen image directly onto the lino with lead pencil. I either work from a photograph of a scene (usually with trees) or, I pick a bunch of flowers from our garden and arrange them in a vase to draw them.
Once I have the drawing complete, I begin cutting away the lino with sharp tools. Whatever I cut away will be white when I print.
After cutting, it is ready to print. Black ink is rolled over the surface of the lino, paper is placed over the ink and the whole thing is either rolled in a press, or I rub the back of the paper firmly with a wooden spoon.
The paper is carefully lifted off the lino block to reveal the print.
If I intend to add colour to the print, I have to wait a number of days for the black ink to dry. Then, using Winsor and Newton quality watercolour paints, I paint in between the black lines while referring to the actual colours in the flowers in the work. Many times, I return to the garden to get fresh flowers to work from so the colours are realistic.
This oil painting measures 2.6 metres x 1.2 metres.
So a large painting which took years to complete while i was still teaching full time. I used a combination of many photographs, onsite drawings and pieces of trees and moss from the site, to complete a detailed work.
